What's actually in your clothes and bedding?

Most brands don't tell you. We do. Here's everything you need to know about fibers, certifications, and why it matters what touches your skin.

Your skin is your largest organ — and it absorbs what it comes into contact with. Studies show that synthetic fabrics shed microplastics directly onto your skin during wear, not just into the water when you wash them. Conventional polyester and nylon garments can contain BPA and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals that migrate through skin contact, especially under heat and sweat. The clothes you wear every day, sleep in every night, and dress your children in are in direct contact with your body for hours at a time.

Most people think carefully about what they eat and what they put on their skin. Few think about what their clothes are made of — because the fashion industry has never been required to make it easy to find out.

SAVI was built to change that. Every product on this site has been vetted for fiber content and chemical safety before it's listed. Here's what we look for — and why.

What “non-toxic” means here

Not a vibe. A rule. No polyester, no nylon, no acrylic, no recycled plastics, no conventional cotton, no PFAS, no formaldehyde — not lower amounts. None.

One exception, disclosed on every product that has it. Stretch garments may contain up to 11% elastane — only with an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificate on the finished garment, always labeled with a Stretch badge, and you can filter it out entirely.

Every certificate checked. We verify certificate numbers against the public registries before a product is listed. That's the whole definition. You don't have to trust us — you can check.

Not all natural fibers are equal

Cotton is the world's most pesticide-intensive crop — it covers only 2.5% of global farmland but uses around 16% of the world's insecticides. Here's the part most brands don't mention: those pesticides absorb into the cotton fiber itself during farming. Not onto the surface — into the fiber.

Independent studies have found that after six home washes, between 1% and 42% of pesticide residue remains in conventional cotton fabric. It doesn't wash out. When you wear conventional cotton next to your skin all day, those residues have direct skin contact — and skin is the body's largest organ.

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or herbicides. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and OCS (Organic Content Standard) certifications verify this from farm to finished garment. That's why SAVI requires organic certification for all cotton products.

Why don't linen, hemp, wool, and silk need organic certification?

Because they don't have the same problem.

  • Linen (flax) is naturally pest-resistant. Flax plants repel insects without pesticides — European flax in particular is grown without chemical inputs by default. The fiber doesn't absorb pesticides during growth the way cotton does.
  • Hemp is one of the most naturally pest-resistant crops on earth. It improves soil health, requires no irrigation in most climates, and needs no pesticides to grow well.
  • Wool is sheared from sheep. The fiber itself doesn't absorb pesticides during the animal's life. Animal welfare is a separate concern — which is why we require humane sourcing certifications for wool — but the fiber poses no pesticide residue risk.
  • Silk comes from silkworm cocoons. Same logic as wool — no pesticide absorption in the fiber.

However: all fibers can be dyed and processed with harsh chemicals after harvest. That's where OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification matters for every fiber — it tests the finished garment for harmful chemical residues regardless of what the raw fiber is.

A note on “wrinkle-free” linen and cotton: easy-care, wrinkle-resistant, and non-iron finishes are usually resin treatments that can release formaldehyde — and they're applied precisely to the fabrics marketed as low-maintenance. SAVI bans formaldehyde treatments outright, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests every certified garment for formaldehyde residue. Real linen wrinkles. That's not a flaw — it's the receipt.

The SAVI rule in plain language:

  • Cotton → must be GOTS or OCS certified organic
  • Everything else → OEKO-TEX on the finished garment catches processing chemicals

Not all certifications are the same

There are seven certifications you'll see on products across the sustainable fashion world. Here's what each one actually verifies — and what it doesn't.

GOTS — Global Organic Textile Standard

What it covers: The entire supply chain, from raw fiber to finished garment. Fiber must be 70%+ certified organic. Every step of processing — spinning, dyeing, finishing, manufacturing — must meet strict chemical restrictions. Wastewater treatment at factories is required. Labor and social standards are audited too.

What it confirms: Organic fiber AND a clean production process AND ethical labor practices.

What it doesn't confirm: Nothing significant — GOTS is the most comprehensive certification in the textile industry. If a garment is GOTS certified, it's as verified as it gets.

SAVI use: GOTS-certified products are fast-tracked through our verification process.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

What it covers: The finished product. Tests the garment for over 100 harmful substances — heavy metals, formaldehyde, pesticides, phthalates, PFAS, and more.

What it confirms: The finished garment you wear is free from harmful chemical residues.

What it doesn't confirm: Whether the fiber is organic, how the factory treats its workers, or whether the production process is clean. A polyester garment can be OEKO-TEX certified — the test is about residues in the final product, not the fiber type or process.

SAVI use: Required for all finished garments, and mandatory for modal, bamboo viscose, and elastane-containing products.

Fair Trade

What it covers: Worker wages, labor conditions, and community benefits in the supply chain.

What it confirms: Ethical treatment of workers and fair compensation.

What it doesn't confirm: Fiber content, chemical safety, or production process. A Fair Trade garment can be made from conventional polyester.

SAVI use: A values-alignment signal we appreciate, but it doesn't replace fiber or chemical certification.

B Corp

What it covers: The company's overall environmental and social practices as a business.

What it confirms: The company behind the brand operates responsibly.

What it doesn't confirm: Anything about specific products, fiber content, or chemical safety. A B Corp company can sell conventional polyester.

SAVI use: A positive signal about a brand's values and practices, but not a substitute for product-level certification.

LWG — Leather Working Group

What it covers: The environmental performance of leather tanneries — an independent audit of water use, chemical management, energy consumption, and supply chain traceability. Ratings run from Bronze to Gold.

What it confirms: The leather was tanned at a facility with verified responsible chemical and environmental practices, and the supply chain behind it is traceable.

What it doesn't confirm: Animal welfare at the farm level, or anything about the rest of the product — LWG certifies the tannery, not the finished garment.

SAVI use: Required for all leather products — Gold or Silver rated tanneries only. We exclude the lowest passing tier.

RDS — Responsible Down Standard

What it covers: Down and feathers, from farm to finished product. Certifies that birds are never subjected to force-feeding or live-plucking, with the full supply chain tracked at every step. Independently audited by Textile Exchange.

What it confirms: The down inside a product came from birds treated humanely, with chain-of-custody verification from farm to finished product.

What it doesn't confirm: Chemical safety or fiber content of the rest of the product — RDS is about the fill, not the fabric around it.

SAVI use: Required for all down fill. EU-farmed down is exempt — EU animal welfare law already covers it.

RWS / ZQ+ — Responsible Wool Standard

What it covers: Sheep welfare and land management on wool farms. RWS certifies that sheep are raised with respect for animal welfare and that land is managed responsibly, independently audited by Textile Exchange. ZQ+ is a New Zealand–specific premium wool program with similarly rigorous welfare and sustainability standards.

What it confirms: The wool comes from farms with verified animal welfare and responsible land management.

What it doesn't confirm: Chemical safety of dyeing and finishing — that's what OEKO-TEX covers.

SAVI use: We accept either RWS or ZQ+ for wool. EU-farmed wool is exempt — EU animal welfare law already covers it.

Most activewear and everyday clothing is made from synthetic materials derived from petroleum. Here's how the most common fibers compare on the things that matter for your body and the planet.

Toxicity risk refers to the potential for harmful chemical exposure through skin contact with the finished garment.

Note on recycled synthetics: Recycled polyester (rPET) sheds approximately 2× more microplastics than virgin polyester and may contain higher BPA levels. "Recycled" is an environmental claim — not a body-safety claim. SAVI does not carry recycled plastic fabrics in any percentage.

Stretch, explained

A little stretch makes clothes wearable — waistbands that recover, leggings that hold their shape. But stretch fibers are where hidden plastics and chemicals sneak into "natural" clothing, so this is where we look hardest.

Elastane, spandex, and Lycra are the same fiber. Elastane is the European name, spandex the American one, and Lycra® a brand — like Kleenex for tissues. Whatever the label calls it, our same rule applies.

The SAVI stretch rule

Up to 11% elastane, virgin or plant-based only, always OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified. Products that meet it carry our Stretch badge. Everything else on SAVI is 100% natural or certified plant-based fiber.

OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 tests every component of a finished garment against 1,000+ harmful substances, and cut its BPA limit tenfold in 2025. Every certificate is independently verifiable — we check each vendor's certificate number before listing.

Plant-Based — what it is, and why it's not the same as natural

Pure Plant-Based

You'll see a blue Plant-Based badge on some SAVI products. Here's what that means and why it's a separate category from our green Pure badge.

Pure means 100% natural fiber — cotton, linen, wool, hemp, silk, or similar. These fibers come directly from nature and require minimal processing to become fabric.

Plant-Based means the fiber started as a plant but went through a chemical process to become fabric. The result is still genuinely plant-derived — not petroleum-based — but it's not the same as spinning raw flax into linen.

TENCEL lyocell — the cleanest plant-based option

TENCEL is made from wood pulp (usually eucalyptus, beech, or spruce) using a closed-loop solvent process. The solvent used to dissolve the wood pulp is non-toxic and is recovered and reused at a 99%+ rate. Almost nothing escapes into wastewater. The fiber is soft, breathable, moisture-wicking, and biodegradable.

This is why TENCEL is rated "Very Good" on SAVI rather than just "Plant-Based" — the process is genuinely clean. The small gap from "Excellent" is the industrial energy required and the 1% of solvent that isn't recovered.

On SAVI: TENCEL lyocell products are pre-approved. OEKO-TEX certification on the finished garment is required.

Modal — plant-based, more processing

Modal is also made from wood pulp (usually beech trees) but uses a more open chemical process than TENCEL. The solvents aren't fully recovered, which means more chemical waste enters the environment during production.

The key question for wearers: does modal leave harmful chemical residue in the finished garment? When properly manufactured and OEKO-TEX certified, the answer is no. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests for over 100 harmful substances in the finished fabric — a certified modal garment has passed that test.

On SAVI: Modal is approved with mandatory OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification. Product pages state "Modal" clearly — not just "Plant-Based."

Bamboo viscose — same story as modal

Most "bamboo" fabric is actually bamboo viscose — the bamboo plant is dissolved in chemicals and reformed into fiber. Despite bamboo's eco-friendly reputation as a plant, the viscose manufacturing process is chemically intensive.

An OEKO-TEX certified bamboo viscose garment has been tested and confirmed safe to wear. Without certification, there's no way to verify the chemical residue level in the finished product.

On SAVI: Bamboo viscose is approved with mandatory OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification. Generic "bamboo" marketing without certification is not accepted. Product pages state "Bamboo viscose" clearly.

Note: Mechanically processed bamboo linen (rare) is a true natural fiber and qualifies for the Pure badge — it's processed the same way as linen, without chemicals.

The fills inside your pillows and duvets matter too

Most "eco" bedding fills are made from recycled polyester fiber — recycled plastic, still plastic, still shedding microplastics into your bed. SAVI carries bedding filled with genuinely natural alternatives.

Kapok — nature's down alternative

Kapok is a fiber that grows inside the seed pods of the kapok tree, native to West Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central America. The tree produces pods naturally — no farming, no pesticides, no chemical processing required. The fiber is simply harvested from the pods and used as fill.

What it feels like: extremely lightweight and fluffy, similar to down. Naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites.

The honest tradeoff: kapok doesn't spring back as well as down after compression. Pillows filled with kapok may flatten slightly faster over time. It's best suited for pillows and cushions rather than high-loft duvets.

Why it matters: while most "sustainable" pillow brands fill with recycled polyester fiber (still plastic), kapok is genuinely zero-synthetic. It's one of the cleanest fills available.

Natural latex — the long-game fill

Natural latex is made from the sap of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis). The sap is harvested by tapping the tree — a sustainable process that doesn't harm the tree — then processed into foam using one of two methods:

  • Dunlop process: the latex is poured into a mold and baked. Denser and heavier, with a firm feel. More durable.
  • Talalay process: the latex is poured, vacuum-sealed, frozen, then baked. Lighter, more consistent, with a slightly softer feel.

Both are natural rubber foam — no petroleum, no synthetic additives in quality natural latex.

Benefits: naturally antimicrobial, naturally resistant to dust mites and mold, extremely durable (a natural latex mattress or pillow core can last 20+ years), and temperature-regulating.

Important: natural latex is a known allergen for some people. All SAVI products containing natural latex include a latex allergy disclosure on the product page. If you have a latex allergy, avoid these products.
